The International Educational Expedition
Ten days is long enough to earn a rest day, so day one is genuinely empty — no academics, no schedule, just landing, unpacking and sleeping off a long-haul flight. Everything after that is structured, and the country supplies more material than any other chapter we run.
They land at O.R. Tambo after a long-haul flight and are taken to a vetted hotel, and then — deliberately — nothing happens. No academics, no coach, no museum. The day exists so that a group of teenagers can unpack, sleep, adjust to the time zone and start day two functional rather than heroic. Welcome dinner at the hotel.
Gold Reef City is built around an authentic nineteenth-century gold shaft, and students descend it to see how extraction actually worked before machines did the thinking. A live liquid-gold pour follows — smelting, cooling and metal density in front of them, not in a diagram. Then The Wanderers, where Johannesburg’s 1,750-metre altitude thins the air enough to visibly change how a cricket ball flies.
At the Apartheid Museum, students are issued a ticket that assigns them a race and sends them through a separate entrance. That is the first exhibit. The afternoon is Soweto — Vilakazi Street, the only street on earth to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners, and the Hector Pieterson Memorial, where the resistance was led by schoolchildren their own age.
The Cradle of Humankind and the Sterkfontein Caves, where a quarter of all known early hominid fossils have come out of the limestone — fossilisation, palaeoclimatology and actual excavation technique, underground. Then the coach heads north into an extinct volcanic crater 1.2 billion years old that now has elephants in it.
An open-vehicle game drive at first light, guided by professional rangers, tracking the Big Five and reading predator–prey relationships and food webs in real time rather than on a worksheet. In the afternoon an environmental scientist explains anti-poaching technology, satellite tracking and the veterinary science that keeps a rhino alive. The night ends looking at constellations nobody in the group has ever seen.
A final morning drive, this time reading the ground rather than the animals: Pilanesberg’s rare alkaline ring-dyke geology, and how an ancient eruption built the exact habitat the wildlife now occupies. Then back to Johannesburg for the domestic flight to Cape Town, and an evening arrival on the Atlantic seaboard.
The rotating cable car up Table Mountain, weather permitting — and the weather is itself the lesson, because the mountain generates its own cloud layer through orographic uplift. Sandstone geology, plateau formation, microclimate. The afternoon is the Two Oceans Aquarium, where the cold Benguela and warm Agulhas currents collide and produce absurd biodiversity.
Down the peninsula — Chapman’s Peak, the Cape of Good Hope, and the point where the continent runs out. Coastal geomorphology written in cliff and wave. Then Boulders Beach, and an African penguin colony living on a South African beach, which does not stop being funny and does not stop being ecologically serious.
The Cango Caves — vast chambers of dripstone built one mineral drop at a time over hundreds of thousands of years. Speleology, crystallisation loops, and the sheer scale of geological patience. The surrounding Karoo supplies the contrast: semi-desert agriculture, ostriches, and a landscape that could not look less like Cape Town two hours away.
Final Field Research Journal presentations — metallurgy, human rights, volcanic geology, conservation and coastal science, all argued by the students who collected the evidence themselves. Then the transfer, and a flight home that most of the group sleeps through and one of them spends rewriting their subject choices.
