West Coast Field Study

north to south, silicon to granite to space

The route is deliberately sequenced: the technology that shaped the last fifty years first, then the geology that took two billion, and then a laboratory that is currently talking to machines outside the solar system. Students end up with a sense of scale that is very hard to teach any other way.

DAY 1
SAN FRANCISCO
Arrival, and a bridge that was supposed to be impossible

The group lands in San Francisco and the day is kept light for jet lag. A short orientation run to the Golden Gate — a suspension bridge that engineers of the day said could not be built across that channel — sets the tone for the week, which is largely about people ignoring that kind of advice.

DAY 2
SILICON VALLEY
A wafer, a cleanroom, and the garage it all started in

The Intel Museum takes students through photolithography and the multi-step chemical fabrication that turns sand into a processor — cleanroom physics included. Then the Computer History Museum traces the architecture from mechanical calculators to supercomputers, with the pioneers on video explaining what they were thinking at the time.

DAY 3
SILICON VALLEY
Apple Park, then a campus they could apply to

The Apple Park Visitor Center as a study in corporate design paradigms — how consumer experience and ecosystem thinking drive a product line — with a Today at Apple session. Then Stanford: a walking analysis of the pipeline from research to company, on a campus that has produced an unreasonable number of both.

DAY 4
YOSEMITE
A glacier came through here and took the valley with it

East into the Sierra Nevada. Yosemite Valley is a textbook U-shape — evidence, at scale, of ice doing what water cannot. El Capitan and Half Dome demonstrate granite exfoliation, sheets of rock peeling off in curves. Students who have drawn glacial landforms in an exercise book stand inside one.

DAY 5
YOSEMITE → LAS VEGAS
Out of the mountains, into the desert

A long transit day with the landscape doing the teaching — Sierra granite giving way to Mojave desert, and a visible change in vegetation, soil and settlement pattern through the window. Evening arrival in Las Vegas, which is itself a case study in building a city where the water does not naturally go.

DAY 6
HOOVER DAM → GRAND CANYON
Six and a half million tonnes of concrete

Hoover Dam: a concrete gravity-arch structure holding back the Colorado, generating power for three states and cooled by embedded pipework because the concrete would otherwise still be curing. Then on to the Grand Canyon West Rim for the first sight of it, which reliably silences a coach.

DAY 7
GRAND CANYON
Two billion years, written down the wall

A full day at the canyon reading stratification: each visible band a different era, the whole sequence cut by a river that is still cutting. Plateau geomorphology, differential erosion, and the sort of timescale that makes a fourteen-year-old go quiet. The Skywalk, for those who want to stand over it.

LOS ANGELES
Talking to something outside the solar system

Into Los Angeles, and NASA JPL — where rovers are designed, tested and then commanded across interplanetary distance, with a signal delay measured in minutes. Deep space telemetry, spacecraft engineering, and the Deep Space Network. The afternoon shifts to production technology: practical effects, sound engineering and the industrial pipeline behind a film.

LOS ANGELES → HOME
Presentations on the coast, then the flight

A final coastal morning — Santa Monica, the Pacific, and the end of the continent — followed by Field Research Journal presentations delivered to the whole group. Then LAX, and a flight home over the pole with a folder of evidence and a substantially revised idea of what is possible.
